    DigitalFilipino Start-up 100 Project

As I shared in our Facebook group and in this article, I have been studying the idea of coming up with a project to help start-ups (companies less than 5 years old) and rolling this out within the DigitalFilipino Club.

Here are some of the ideas about it and would like to ask our SME and Corporate members participation in this project on two aspects: (your inputs will also be appreciated)

    1. Be a mentor (aiming for 100)
This is where you can share your knowledge through either a webinar, recorded learning session, face-to-face workshop, and consultation session. You can pick a topic(s) you like - preferably one where you see it most valuable for start-ups.

    2. Be an investor (aiming for 100)
I aim for the program to help 100 start-ups (beginning and market expansion stage). SME or Corporate members supporting this project needs to invest in at least 1 start-up for the one year period (before end of 2012) in order to continue receiving notice of applications and start-up presentations (webinar / face-to-face).

Club members interested can contact me, give topics you are interested in handling, for our mentoring sessions.

For investors, please indicate as well an estimated amount you will be willing to invest (cash and value in exchange) for start-ups. For example, 250k in cash and 250k through services (for a total of 500k) for one start-up. This will help give me an indication on the pool we have for this project too.

Digital Entrepreneurship Program (free learning online)

The DigitalFilipino Club site will also be updated today announcing this project, encouraging people to sign-up in our free learning sessions online. The list of mentors (those of you who will reply) shall also be listed.

The learning session topics are given by mentors. Some are also inspired from the books High Tech Start Up, Business Model Generation, and Art of the Start. Will add more resources as mentors suggest them.

    Start-Up Application Process
Those who are ready to apply for start-up support / funding will also be able to fill-up a form online.

    1. Upon receipt of application, the first round of online presentation will be done with me so I can review what they have to offer and prepare them further for the group (those of you who will join this project).

    2. Start-up presents online to the group (those of you who will join this project).

    3. Investor(s) (those of you who will join this project) interested with the company shall be set-up and introduced for face-to-face meeting and presentation.

    4. Proceed with negotiations from there.

I was at first struggling with the idea of processing application on a per-batch basis accepting only 6 out of a bulk number. Decided, for now, not to adopt such an idea in order to help more digital entrepreneurs out there.

Note that Mentors / Investors participation in this project is for SME and Corporate members only of the DigitalFilipino Club.

Start-Ups seeking access to online learning and funding need not be club members. However, club members seeking funding help will get access to our club materials, learning sessions, consultation sessions, and other members-only privileges.

DigitalFilipino Club - IMMAP Discussion Briefing on Online Sales Promotion with DTI

One of the hot issues online today is promotions happening on social networks and websites, organized by companies and individuals, that doesn't have purchase requirements. In the past, these are assumed not requiring DTI Sales Promotion Permit.

However, due to various issues arising on these promotions, where some don't go very well, these no-purchase-required campaigns are beginning to be seen as "goodwill building" type of activities and therefore may now be required to have a DTI Sales Promotion Permit.

DTI DAO 10-02 series of 2010: Addenda to DAO 2 series of 1993 or the Rules and Regulations Implementing Rep...

On the same level, bloggers and online personalities organize their own goodwill building activities where they give away prizes either as sponsored or items bought / cash prize given by themselves. More than ever, clarity on DTI Sales Promotion Permit process is necessary in these online promotion scenarios.

There are also instances where information of contest joiners get shared online without regard to data privacy that brings worry on the information handling of online contest managers and organizers.

The DigitalFilipino Club, in collaboration with the Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines (IMMAP), shall have a "Discussion Briefing on Online Sales Promotion" with the Department of Trade and Industry this July 28 Thursday from 1 to 6 pm in Makati City (sponsored by IMMAP).

    Agenda as follows:
    1. DTI - Welcome remarks / introduction of participants (1:45 to 2 pm)
    2. Online promotion landscape - corporate (2 pm to 3:00 pm)
    3. Online promotion landscape - individual (3 pm to 4:00 pm)
    4. DTI Sales Promotion Permit guidelines (4:00 to 5:00 pm)

Each topic will have an allotted time for question and answer discussion.

DTI friends from various departments including legal, policy development, consumer protection, fair trade practices, domestic trade, and e-commerce office are participating to foster a full dialogue on this timely subject.

Note that the DigitalFilipino Club only has 15 slots in this event.

In that regard, only those who are willing to share links on promotions you have done that I can use in preparing the DTI brief shall be able to attend this.

Club members are requested to send me an e-mail reply (or use this contact form) with your past or current online promotion. Once done, will send venue details.

24 Videos on 1st Month - DigitalFilipino Talks

DigitalFilipino Talks started last January 10 and as of this writing already has 24 videos posted and played more than 2000 times. The series caters to a diverse audience of micro and small entrepreneurs, service providers, and multinational firms.

We intend to produce up to 65 interview episodes to complete our first season. We already passed through our 5th week and have 8 more weeks to go. Once that is done, I will take stock on what we have and seek further inspiration to do new stuff that shall promote our club members, allies, and share knowledge to the community at large.

Running an online talk show was not as easy as it appears. More than just the actual shoot that takes place three times (3x) a month, the daily promotion through social networks and other platforms is something that needs to be continuously done to push for maximum visibility.

Furthermore, I use the interviews in writing my weekly column to reflect and add insight.

On this 2nd month, you can expect us to step up the promotions further as we engage the community to interact.

Many thanks to club members, new sign-up and renewal, whose membership fees help make this experimental project possible.

DigitalFilipino Talks - Look Who's Talking

For the last 2 years, I allotted resources in the DigitalFilipino Club to organize conferences that can be of benefit to our members. This is both from member promotion to learning perspective. After an event, efforts to come up with knowledge sharing videos, integrated with the speaker presentation, gets worked on. However, it takes a lot of time that also results to backlog.

For 2011, I decided to take a different approach. As knowledge sharing and promotion of our members is our primary goal, then it should not be limited to an event. That is when the idea for DigitalFilipino Talks came in. The resource that we usually allot for conferences is now invested in this video series.

Rather than make a once-a-week episode or show style and be like most online video or talk programs out there, we went to the almost extreme of making it daily on weekdays. Hopefully in the process, our efforts will also be noticeable.

Feedback we are getting at this point are positive so far. Got suggestions as well on how can we further improve.
