10th year anniversary of the DigitalFilipino Club - a community of e-commerce advocates

The DigitalFilipino Club has its hands full this 2013 with a lot of activities taking place in different parts of the country as we go all out in our Startup 100 Project. This is also part of our 10th year celebration as a community. (DigitalFilipino Club started last December 25, 2003)

Club members are reminded to avail of their free slots in both free and online programs:
  • Corporate (3 slots)
  • SME (2 slots)
  • individual (1 slot)

E-Learning programs (protege membership):

There are also face-to-face training programs that are happening in different parts of the country where club members can send participants.

  • Search Engine and Social Media Marketing workshop took place in Ateneo De Manila Graduate School of Business last January 2013.
  • Digital Marketing and E-Commerce Project Planning and Review took place in Tagaytay and Boracay this year.
  • E-Commerce Boot Camp took place in 9 provincial locations (Cebu, Davao, Boracay, Pagadian, Dipolog, General Santos, Bohol, Zamboanga, Naga) this year.
  • The Digital Influencer Boot Camp was conducted in 6 provincial locations (Cebu, Davao, Boracay, Cagayan De Oro, Dagupan, Bohol) as well.
  • Search Influencer Boot Camp was brought to Cebu and Davao.
  • Digital Marketing and E-Commerce for the Tourism Industry was done in Boracay and Bohol.
  • E-Commerce Entrepreneur Program had its first face-to-face session at Ateneo Graduate School of Business last October 2013.
  • E-Commerce Creators Boot Camp - WordPress will have its first run in Boracay this December 2 and 3.

Not to mention our annual activities such as the:

  • E-Commerce Summit. This took place in Manila and Cebu early February and March 2013. Our next year's event will be on February 15, 2014 and re-branding it as an E-Commerce Entrepreneurs Summit.
  • Digital Influencers Marketing Summit happened in La Union, Rizal, and Manila last January, February, and September 2013. Our next one will happen sometime September 2014.
This does not include the talks and outreach I have done this year in partnership with government agencies, companies, and various organizations.

The next 5 to 10 years

2014 will be a period of big change for the club as we begin with our 11th year. I will slow down.

We will focus on building technical training components necessary to help aspiring e-commerce entrepreneur startups getting knowledge resource access they need.

This includes building training modules on:
  • Mobile application development
  • E-Commerce security (hope to finally finish my Certified Ethical Hacker certification)
  • Software development standards
  • E-Commerce technologies on B2B
  • E-Commerce platforms for B2C
  • Predictive analytics
We will still complete some e-commerce marketing and entrepreneur modules focusing on public relations, corporate communications, and digital marketing entrepreneurship.

The above training programs will be developed with interested club members as co-trainers.

I hope to complete the above before mid-2014 to build the necessary package as we partner with various high school and college educators wanting to use our free e-learning resources in their classroom.

People, Competition, and Change

What I always love about the Internet and e-commerce is that your biggest competition is always yourself. Can you level-up each time you roll out a program? Will you be willing to start over again to reach out to newbies - making yourself accessible in the process?

I think that view has also protected the club through the years as we always focus on how we can be better than the last time in serving members.

Through these changes, we attracted new members in the process who each have their own needs - either for training, connections, mentorship, support, friendship, inspiration, advice, among others.

Thank you to all of our club members who have joined and especially to those who have stayed with us for at least 5 years (and became our honorary members). This community would not have lasted this long without you. I am honored and humbled every day by the trust you have given in supporting our e-commerce advocacy.

Here's to the next 5 to 10 years.

Touching 6000 people on first quarter 2013

The first quarter of 2013 can be considered as unprecedented as we are able to reach out to at least 6000 persons face-to-face and online through our free E-Commerce Boot Camp and Digital Influencer Boot Camp webinars.

AIE College - DigitalFilipino E-Commerce Boot Camp

Here's a run down of what we did in the first quarter of 2013:

1. Cebu E-Commerce Summit and Cebu E-Commerce Boot Camp

Close to 110 participants grace the event making this 1st E-Commerce Summit and Boot Camp in Cebu a success.

2. AIE College E-Commerce Boot Camp

Around 1600 students joined this activity making it our biggest E-Commerce Boot Camp to date.

3. E-Commerce Boot Camp Mindanao kicks off in General Santos City and Zamboanga

77 participants joined our E-Commerce Boot Camp General Santos City and E-Commerce Boot Camp Zamboanga City that debunks earlier perception of Mindanao being not ready for e-commerce.

4. The 1st E-Commerce Boot Camp UP Diliman, E-Commerce / Digital Marketing Project Planning Workshop / Personal Goal Setting, and Search Engine / Blog / Social Media Strategy Workshop at Ateneo-Rockwell

Manila served as an important jump off point as we launched the 1st E-Commerce Boot Camp at UP Diliman last January 11.

We served the needs of our club members by giving workshops specifically for them such as the E-Commerce / Digital Marketing Project Planning Workshop / Personal Goal Setting, and Search Engine / Blog / Social Media Strategy Workshop at Ateneo-Rockwell.

5. Club members in action

Club members also helped out shared their knowledge in the Digital Influencers Marketing Summit La Union, Digital Influencers Marketing Summit Rizal,  4th DigitalFilipino E-Commerce Summit Manila, and Cebu E-Commerce Summit.

I also spoke at the following events this 1st quarter:

1. PR Batch Gilas - DLSU Dasmarinas (March 26)
2. The 3rd Annual Sales and Marketing Professionals Convention (March 21)
3. Social Media Influencers Summit (March 16)
4. Internet Mastery Workshop (March 9)
5. Legal Forum on Data Privacy and Cybercrime (February 21)
6. PUP Technology Festival 2013 (February 21)
7. Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (February 15)
8. Thomasian Junior Marketing Association (February 6)
9. MarketingJays - PUP (February 5)
10. Batangas Information Technology Council (February 2)
11. Junior Media Summit (January 24)
12. GoNegosyo 2nd Filipino Technopreneurship Summit (January 21)

Although the volume of speaking engagements I had is no longer new, the simultaneous club-initiated activities through our boot camps and summits further increase the activity level.

And we are just beginning...

Our 2nd quarter to 4th quarter will result to more activities as we increase our boot camps. Definitely, club member participation will be of great importance.

2012 Summary

Hello Club Members. As always, here's sharing to you what activities transpired this 2012 and citing some ideas in mind for 2013. Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.

We started the year with our 3rd free webinar encouraging entrepreneurs to share their start-up experience.

I took a step back afterwards, reflected on the project heavily, as many groups came out also having the same intention of helping start-ups.

Just launched the Free E-Commerce Boot Camp Online last November 29 to support this project. With 36 webinar series and 12 topics (around 70 sub-topics) lined-up, I consider this project as my biggest investment to date as the webinars, handouts, lessons, assignments, and online mentoring cost can reach up to 3.5 million assuming that the development of the topic material and online mentorship with participants is around P100k each (per topic / sub-topic).

Launched the 2012 edition announcing only 35 topics. However, will be adding another topic focusing on crowdfunding and will likely build a platform for this. This 1st quarter of 2013, will be going to Singapore to formalize the entity that will support this process.

I hope to get more of club members involved in this one, to share their e-commerce business start-up experience, with the intent of inspiring others in their e-business adventures. Also, as an angel investor of potential e-commerce projects coming out of the boot camp.

2. SEO / E-Commerce / Blog/ Social Media workshop

We were able to do 2 workhops on this one this year. We are scheduled to do another one again this January 2013.

Our 3rd one was highlighted with Gillian Muessig of SEOMoz doing the keynote for the event. We are bringing this event to the grassroots this 2013 by lowering its cost and do it on several locations.

(We should meet up there again. Very lovely place.)

5. E-Commerce / Digital Marketing Business Model Review / Project Planning

We did a series of e-commerce / digital marketing project planning workshop and integrate the Business Model Generation topic. Held club workshops in Baguio, Palawan, and Tagaytay.

We organized a tech workshop and got great feedback for this one. Yes, will be doing one again this 2013 and add another topic too.

7. FITFIL

Last July 2012, I introduced FITFIL to the group and offered a subsidy for those joining. None of the club members were able to join at that time. However, I am glad that some finally did in its SM-MOA leg.

We did a 3 weeks ethical hacking workshop at the Philippine National Police with the aim of strengthening our relationship with law enforcement and as I prepare for my CEH 7.0 certification. Will be doing one again this 2013.

Courtesy of the US Embassy, we met Garrette Gee and learned about the potential of QR codes. Started using it as well in our events such as the Digital Influencers Marketing Summit.

10. Digital Influencers Marketing Summit

We had two #dim2012 events (Manila and Cebu) this year. For 2013, will be bringing it to more locations starting with La Union and Rizal.

We had a meeting with the Bureau of Internal Revenue regarding their upcoming circular reminding businesses on tax obligations with regards to online transactions.

Some developments to expect this 2013 (in addition to what I shared above for continuity of 2012 efforts):

1. New membership rates (effective January 1, 2013)
This will affect new members only and those won't be able to renew according to schedule. The new rates are meant to cover as well the declining dollar - peso exchange rate.

2. New membership category (tentative)
This is meant to welcome super newbies in the group. It seems our club rates are still deemed high despite our numerous free benefits to club members. I am still having 2nd thoughts on this one and will think about it further.

3. Grassroot approach
Most of our events this year - Digital Influencers Marketing Summit and DigitalFilipino E-Commerce Summit - will target the grassroots market segment or those who can only afford below P5000 investment rate in pursuing additional learning.

4. Junior DigitalFilipino Club
To support our E-Commerce Boot Camp, will be launching the Junior DigitalFilipino Club program this 2013 whose primary objective is to get students to participate in this boot camp online and offline.

5. Club portal
Will be migrating the club site from its own domain to within DigitalFilipino.com. Currently evaluating platforms that we can use. Definitely, I want it to be more than just forums, article posting, and member public profile pages.

6. Code of Ethics
Will be releasing a Code of Ethics that E-Commerce Boot Camp graduates will adhere to. Will be sharing it here to review if it is something that can also be adopted within the club.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Club Members!

October 30: Consultative meeting with Bureau of Internal Revenue on "Understanding Online Transactions Process"

Hello Club Members. The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) invited us for a consultative session on "understanding online transactions process".

This will be on October 30, 2012, Tuesday, 2:00 p.m. at the 10th floor, Training Room, BIR National Office Bldg., BIR Road, Diliman Quezon City.

If you recall, in our earlier years in the club, we also had a meeting with BIR who enlightened us on how individuals and consultants specializing in the ICT field can conduct transactions and issue receipts.

Hopefully, in this session, we can have a better understanding with the BIR on the nature of e-commerce whether done as a hobby or real business.

Club members sending a representative in this session are requested to contact me on or before October 25 and give me the name / contact number / email address of your representative.

Thank you.

DigitalFilipino Club roundtable discussion with Garrett Gee

The DigitalFilipino Club had a roundtable event last August 1 at the US Embassy Seafront Compound, Pasay City.

Our guest resource person was Garrett Gee, a young founder and chief executive officer of Scan, Inc., a company involved in creating web-based and mobile tools which enable both enterprises and individuals to benefit from mobile transaction technologies. Inc. also dubbed Scan as one of America's coolest college start-up for 2012. Garrett also founded and served as the creative director of Capital G Design.

(Note that there should be sound at around 2:00)

Many thanks to club members who joined us despite the heavy rain downpour. I enjoyed our discussion with Garrett and hope to do this more with other entrepreneurs in the future.

June 25 to July 26: DigitalFilipino Club joins FITFIL Fitness Boot Camp

The DigitalFilipino Club is joining the FITFIL Fitness Boot Camp Manila scheduled this June 25 to July 26 (6:00 to 8:00 pm every Monday-Wednesday-Friday) at Bonifacio Global City High Street Grounds, Taguig City.

DigitalFilipino Club Members can get subsidized slots at the following rates. Regular rate is at P1000 per person.
With the popularity of the Internet and telecommuting, a big chunk of our time gets spent working online. We get busier virtually and oftentimes neglect our health. As a result, a growing number of people in our industry segment are not fit. That includes me.

After going through a 1-month Immuvit MetaFit challenge with Coach Jim Saret, I was able to experience improvement in terms of stamina, agility, and gradually losing weight in the process.

The FITFIL Fitness Boot Camp has a very successful run in Cebu and am already looking forward to its Manila leg. However, it will be great if club members like you will also be able to enjoy the program and experience the benefits first-hand.

To reserve your slot, please contact Janette Toral.
